Level 1 Kicking Coach focuses on the foundations of AFL kicking technique and how coaches can effectively teach the drop punt within training environments. It provides coaches with a clear framework for understanding kicking mechanics, identifying common errors, and using appropriate coaching cues to support learning. Coaches are introduced to key skill development and skill acquisition principles, including how players learn movement skills, why technique varies between individuals, and when intervention is most effective.

A strong emphasis is placed on observation and diagnosis, helping coaches recognise what matters most when assessing a player’s kick, rather than over-coaching visible but irrelevant details. Coaches will also learn how to design simple kicking tasks using constraints to support technique development, while respecting individual movement solutions.  Level 1 establishes a shared kicking language and philosophy, giving coaches
confidence to teach the kick consistently, accurately, and in a way that supports long term development rather than short-term correction.
